The Position

2025 Summer Intern - Neuroscience Department

Department Summary

The Neuroscience Department at Genentech is seeking a highly motivated Summer Intern to develop state-of-the-art iPSC-derived complex models to investigate novel cell-cell interactions and responses related to neurodegenerative disease. You will fully utilize a variety of cellular, molecular, and genetic techniques in human cell culture, depending on levels of prior expertise.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

The selected candidate will contribute to a project focused on understanding the interaction between human iPSC-derived neurons and glial cells in the context of neurodegeneration. This role involves establishing a scalable neuron/glial co-culture assay, utilizing high-throughput confocal imaging and various biochemical, omics, and functional assays as readouts. Through this work, the candidate will develop a highly relevant industry-level skill set in advanced cellular and molecular techniques.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2025.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Engagement with challenging and impactful discovery projects

  • Work with various experts in the field and a talented and experienced team in the biotechnology industry.

  • Professional & personal development throughout the program, including final presentations of project to senior leaders and collaborators, networking opportunities, various seminars & workshops.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

Required majors: Neuroscience, Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, Immunology or related fields.

Required skills:

  • Human cell culture.

  • Experience with IF and microscopy / confocal imaging.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills with an innovative spirit.

  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.

  • Experience with iPSC neuronal & glial cultures or organoids is desired.

  • Experience with molecular biology including RNA work and biochemical immunoassays & flow cytometry (FACS) is a plus.

  • Neuroscience, stem cell biology, and/or immunology knowledge is preferred.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location ofCalifornia is $45.00 per hour.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
