Position Purpose:

The Long Haul Planner Sr. is responsible for acting as the subject matter expert for utilizing dynamic routing tools to develop route plans and daily maintenance of Long Haul Routing data. This position will provide strategic support for the Regional Manager - Long Haul and Field Operations to ensure that the most efficient lanes are chosen for route. The LH planning role has a strong foundation of creating routing plans and should focus on (1) reliability to our internal and external customers, (2) drive incremental productivity improvements, (3) stay compliant with DOT regulations and (4) support all safety initiatives. Actively collaborates with Transportation Supervisors, Managers and local dispatchers on LH route execution and enhancements to future route plans. Develop and maintain standard routes in the routing tool as well as manage all data cleansing efforts. The position allows for a team member to learn the transportation business from the group up providing the ground work to enter other leadership roles within the organization.

Key Job Activities:

Reliability to our external customers:

  • Maintains CUSTOMER 1ST CULTURE throughout entire Transportation Department.
  • Ensures service team provides highest standard of customer service and positively impacting customer service through efficient routing.
  • Works proactively with transportation Team Members, as well as all other functional operations (Plant, Sharps Management, Specialty Waste, etc.) to meet all customers' expectations.
  • Drive incremental productivity improvements:
  • Attempts to dispatch the fewest required resources to minimize cost from trucks, miles and personnel.
  • Maintains optimum utilization of resources.
  • Monitors route and work productivity, reports on trends, and recommends changes to continually improve productivity and routing efficiency. Works closely with Transportation Managers and facilities on implementation of recommended changes based on monthly action plan to address notable deficiencies.
  • Daily or weekly meetings/calls partnering closely with facilities to discuss plans, standards and any other topic to improve performance to plan (based on need of facility).
  • Work with Data personnel to ensure accurate data for new customers and reroutes. Review post route performance and make adjustments to service time, time windows, and geo-codes and standards.
  • Complete consolidated manifests for trailer shipments.
  • Enter 3rd Party Hauler order and paperwork upon approval by the Transportation Supervisor/Manager.
  • Communication with external vendors to ensure on-time deliveries are met.
  • Work with Field Managers to implement new routing plans as needed.
Experience (North America):
  • Bachelor's degree preferred andthe equivalent in Long Haul transportation experience. BS in a Transportation, logistics or business related field a plus.
  • Three to five years of Long Haul experienceor equivalent industry experience in a routing capacity. Demonstrates the ability to manage people in a transportation environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide safe and regulatory compliant work conditions for all Team Members. Past experience utilizing Roadnet Logistics Suite/Descartes or equivalent routing software required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and the ability to stay abreast of applicable regulations and codes, as they apply to the waste industry and those specific to area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel (medium level or higher), PowerPoint, and Outlook. Must be able to input, monitor and manipulate data within these applications. Must have routing capability and/or direct past experience.
  • Past experience utilizing Roadnet Logistics Suite/Descartes or equivalent routing software preferred.
