Description
The Trauma Program Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight, and daily operations of the hospital's Trauma and Burn Surgery Service. This role ensures comprehensive management of program development, staffing, budgeting, and service delivery. Key responsibilities include the oversight of all administrative and patient care activities to ensure compliance with standards set by the American College of Surgeons for Optimal Care of Trauma Patients, MEIMSS COMAR guidelines for pediatric trauma and burn patients, and the American Burn Association standards.
The incumbent leads and develops a skilled team, fostering both internal and external education on pediatric trauma and burn care, coordinating outreach initiatives with external agencies and transferring hospitals, and advancing injury prevention and departmental research. Additional responsibilities include preparing and analyzing budgets, managing clinical human resource activities, and actively participating in research and regional/national initiatives to enhance trauma and burn care practices.
Qualifications
Minimum Education MSN (Required)
Minimum Work Experience 5 years critical care or emergency department nursing (Required) 1 year supervisory or trauma administration role (Required)
Required Skills/Knowledge Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Access)
Required Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse (Required)Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required) .
Functional Accountabilities Maintain and implement Trauma and Burn Surgery Service administration
- In collaboration with the director and chief, ensure the trauma and burn programs maintain compliance with the American College of Surgeons and MEIMSS Level One Pediatric Trauma Standards and Pediatric Burn Standards.
- In collaboration with the director and chief, develop a strategic plan for the advancement of the Trauma and Burn Surgery Service. Implement strategic plan through management of day-to-day operations of department/service area.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and develop action plans to resolve.
- Collaborate on significant operational issues/barriers with the director and chief.
- In collaboration with the director and chief, develop, implement and evaluate services, programs, policies and procedures, and performance standards to achieve departmental goals.
- Responsible for administering programs within budgetary guidelines.
- Develop staffing plans/schedules to optimize productivity and ensure quality services.
- Coordinate with the Trauma and Burn APPs on professional development activities and goal attainment.
- Maintain knowledge in the advancement of pediatric trauma and burn care to ensure the trauma and burn program performs at the highest standard.
- Represent the Trauma and Burn program locally, regionally and nationally.
Prepare budget and financial analysis and administers to HRM clinical activities
- Contribute to development and monitoring of operating, special purpose funds and capital budgets.
- Collaborate with director and chief, the manager in evaluating performance reports and budget variances and developing action plans.
- Implement actions to facilitate meeting budget requirements.
- Evaluate billing practices and reimbursement. Seeks opportunities to improve billing practices and trauma activation charges
- In collaboration with director and chief, hire, train, develop and direct assigned staff to meet department objectives.
- With the changing volumes of the Trauma and Burn patients, perform FTE analysis to determine staffing needs
- Provide timely coaching and performance feedback and deploy staff appropriately to meet business objectives.
- Coordinate management across the continuum of trauma care, which include planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice management guidelines; monitor care of in-hospital patients.
Education, performance improvement, outreach and injury prevention
- Provide for intra-facility and regional professional staff development, participate in case review , implement practice guidelines and direct community trauma education and prevention programs.
- Organizes and participates in primary, secondary, and tertiary case review. Mentors staff in process improvement and system change.
- In collaboration with the director and chief, identify the need for new practice guidelines, and revision of current guidelines. Leads stakeholders in writing, revising and implementing guidelines using current trauma and burn literature.
- Oversee the monitoring of the clinical processes, outcomes and system issues related to the quality of care provided; assist in improvement initiatives with data driven loop closure.
- Assess community needs and directs community trauma education and prevention programs with identifiable outcomes
- Develop quality filters, audits, and case reviews; identify trends and sentinel events; and help outline remedial actions while maintaining confidentiality.
- Analyze injury data to use to develop and implement injury prevention initiatives at the local and regional level
Oversee trauma registry administration
- Manage, as appropriate, the operational, personnel, and financial aspects of the trauma program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster optimal trauma care management.
- Supervise collection, coding, scoring, and developing processes for validation of data; design the registry to facilitate performance
- Responsible for data accuracy for national benchmarking. In collaboration with the director and chief, analyze benchmark reports for opportunities for improvement; strategize implement improvement initiatives.
- Guides improvement activities, trend reports, and research while protecting confidentiality.
Research and lead community and national involvement in trauma care systems
- Participate in the development of trauma care systems at the community, state, and national levels.
