2025 Summer Intern - Peptide Therapeutics, Early Discovery Biochemistry

The Position

Department Summary
The Peptide Therapeutics group in the Early Discovery Biochemistry department works at the interface of chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, and computation to discover and develop novel peptides as potential drugs, cell-targeting modalities, or tool molecules for ongoing efforts in tissue regeneration, immunology,
oncology, and neurodegeneration. We have an opportunity for a talented and motivated intern to help expand the scope of our peptide discovery platform.

This internship positon is located in South San Francisco, , on-site

The Opportunity

  • Utilize combinatorial mutagenesis techniques to generate high diversity phage libraries
  • Utilize phage display to identify peptide binders to a panel of diverse protein targets.
  • Perform chemoenzymatic bioconjugation reactions
  • Identify peptide hits for target binding using biochemical (ELISAs) and biophysical (SPR) assays
  • Conduct NGS analysis to evaluate success of selections Program Highlights
  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in May/June 2025
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
  • Final presentations of project work as a seminar to the department and senior leaders, as well as
  • a poster session to the broader Genentech community
  • * Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives
  • * Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking,
  • opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions
  • * Participate in volunteer projects, social events, and team-building activities

Who You Are (Required)
Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

  • - Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
  • - Must have attained a Master's Degree.
  • - Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
  • - Must have attained a PhD.

Preferred majors: biochemistry, molecular biology, chemical biology, structural biology, bioengineering, or a related discipline working extensively with proteins and/or peptides

Required Skills:

  • Core competencies include biochemistry & protein engineering, molecular biology (PCR/cloning), and biochemical and/or cell-based assays.
  • A strong background in protein/peptide biochemistry and protein engineering and lab-based skills
  • Experience in phage display technologies preferred, not required
  • Experience in peptide chemistry and bioconjugation technologies preferred, not required

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $35-$50 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
