Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Leads janitorial staff by example and provision of staff training. Performs direct janitorial services in offices, restrooms, and other areas as assigned. Assists supervisor and management with verifying completion of daily tasks by staff in assigned areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Performs general cleaning tasks in office, restrooms, and other general areas as assigned, including but not limited to vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, stripping and waxing floors, and cleaning toilets and sinks
  • Is a positive role model for janitors through demonstrations including but not limited to:

    • Performing tasks to an high level of quality
    • Demonstrating a thorough understanding of the task by providing more than a surface cleaning
    • Completing the assigned tasks in a timely manner, in accordance with approved procedural requirements


  • Communicates effectively with other team members regarding the coordination of tasks that impact the work or working conditions of the other team members
  • Brings correct tools and supplies to the work area for each assigned task
  • Stays at the assigned work area until job is completed and informs supervisor if assigned tasks are not completed by the end of shift or outside of the given daily scheduled timeframe
  • Keeps area neat while working and keeps cleaning cart properly stocked
  • Informs supervisor or designee when supplies are low and need to be ordered
  • Seeks out work that needs to be done, works on ongoing projects, and assists others as requested
  • Reports any maintenance needs (e.g. unsafe or broken sinks and toilets, light bulbs needing to be replaced) to supervisor
  • Adapts to changes in workload, following through with the change as assigned
  • Assists supervision and management in performing contractual requirements, including but not limited to snow removal as needed
  • Accepts feedback on job performance in a professional manner using it to improve performance as needed
  • Addresses visitors and co-workers in a pleasant and respectful manner and displays courtesy at all times
  • Works effectively with a variety of staff members, regardless of varied ethnic, racial and sociological backgrounds
  • Responds appropriately to inquiries and requests in a friendly, cooperative manner
  • Deals with constant interruptions with respect and courtesy
  • Performs all duties in an independent manner, with little or no need for direct supervision
  • Through scheduled and casual visual inspection, identifies areas that are not up to acceptable cleaning standards and works directly with co-worker to make the required adjustments to meet acceptable cleaning standards
  • Works side-by-side with new employees to instruct the employees in the proper processes and protocols in accordance with the established duties checklist until new employee demonstrates that they can perform all tasks independently
  • Assists with quality control reporting, including but not limited to completing weekly written inspection of assigned areas and tasks using approved inspection form; provides correction of deficiencies as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:



  • One (1) year working as a Janitor under an Elwyn government service contract
  • Thorough understanding of the contract cleaning requirements
  • Obtain and maintain Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD) 12 clearance
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain highest level of cleanliness
  • Ability to process a variety of instructions and relay them to others
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in workload
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of staff members, regardless of varied ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated judgment with the ability to independently problem-solve
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems and take appropriate action
  • Must possess excellent customer interaction, written and verbal communication skills
