Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Scripps scientists work to understand and protect the planet by investigating our oceans, Earth, and atmosphere to find solutions to our greatest environmental challenges. Scripps leads research in climate change impacts and adaptation, resilience to hazards, conservation and biodiversity, oceans and human health, national security, and innovative technology to observe the planet. Supporting SIO, Shipboard Technical Support (STS) provides specialized expertise, personnel, instrumentation and support services to scientists that use oceanographic research vessels.

Under the direction of the STS Specialized Services Manager and an Academic Administrator, coordinates operations of the Oceanographic Data Facility (ODF) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography; supervises multiple SRA's in the research activities regarding the physical and chemical properties of seawater masses worldwide. Keeps abreast of new technologies for chemical analysis of sea water and develops new methodologies for use on research ships. Prepares findings for presentation at conferences and publications. The ODF supervisor directs the processing of data collected by in-situ instrumentation and data from laboratory analyses of collected seawater samples; oversees the scheduling of technicians and instrumentation for research cruises and all other ODF project work. The ODF supervisor is the watch leader at sea, responsible for data quality control analysis and process improvement. The ODF Supervisor prepares final data reports and technical notes to be included in scientific publications, and participates in national and international workshops for planning of global hydrographic research.

NOTE: Salary placement is determined by the top candidate's overall qualifications/relevant experience, market data and internal equity.

• Bachelor's degree in related area. Advanced degree preferred.

• Extensive experience with, physical and chemical oceanographic concepts and processes, with emphasis on sampling techniques, materials and methods.

• Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of specialized laboratory equipment.

• Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities, scheduling instructional space, and ensuring completion of multiple projects. Hands-on experience in training, delegation, and performance assessment and coaching.

• Experience operating, maintaining and troubleshooting high precision instruments for the analysis of dissolved nutrients in seawater using a continuous flow analyzer, dissolved oxygen using automatic titrators, and salinity using salinometers.

• Extensive experience in the processing and integration of hydrographic data and subsequent preparation of post-cruise data reports.

• Demonstrated experience to recognize questionable data by application of oceanographic knowledge and experience in hydrographic research at sea.

• Experience developing budgets, cost estimates, tracking effort and expenses

• Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.

• Solid knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.

• Strong abilities to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.

• Advanced knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.

• Must be willing to participate on extended oceanographic cruises for 3-4 months of sea time per year.

• Job offer contingent upon background check clearance.

• Work on board ship with heavy equipment and hazardous chemicals. Must have knowledge of state and local safety regulations and international regulations regarding shipment of dangerous goods

• Must have valid US Passport and Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC) issued to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.
