Overview
The Laboratory Technical Supervisor is responsible, under the direction of a Pathologist and the Manager, for the management of personnel as well as assuring good laboratory practice for assigned pre-analytic, analytic and post analytic workflows. The Laboratory Technical Supervisor responsibilities include: 1) supervision of key processes and the team members performing that work (CLIA waived, moderately and highly complex testing), 2) training and developing team members, 3) scheduling and staffing to workload, 4) lean process improvement, 5) as applicable, serving in the role as a General Supervisor and/or Technical Consultant for regulatory compliance, accreditation and inspection readiness. Responsibilities
Exceptional Care Delivery
- Supervises and builds professional and developmental relationships with team members, up to 15 assigned.
- Continually improves the work performance of self/others by proactively applying new knowledge/skills and training and/or supporting others within or outside the department.
- Assists with the resolution of complex problems and issues, utilizing resources as needed and providing consultation and advice.
- Greets everyone with a pleasant and professional manner, using patient experience best practice guidelines (AIDET, 5/10 Rule and No-Point, etc).
- Identifies patients and samples using two patient identifiers, always labeling samples in the presence of the patient.
- Achieves mastery of the key processes and procedures with assigned oversite.
- Performs CLIA waived, moderately and highly complex testing, where applicable, in accordance with manufacturer specifications using good laboratory practice.
- Actively shares knowledge of computer programs and systems for patient identification, order, sample tracking, reporting test results.
- Role models the use of supply items in a cost effective manner, recognizing when to reorder, and assisting with unpacking and/or restocking items consistent with Kanban workflows.
- Achieves advanced understanding of workflows to answer team member and provider questions in a way that assures mutual understanding.
- Assists in developing and assuring the continuing effectiveness and quality improvement activities of assigned workflows.
- Assists with development of the competency assessment program to ensure a properly functioning process that meets regulatory requirements.
Committed Team
- Works on administrative activities and on clinical workload as scheduling, staffing and workload allows. Scheduling is at the discretion of a Manager.
- Assists Laboratory Managers in the day to day operations, including on-call responsibilities as assigned.
- Communicates clearly, openly, and consistently with management and team members to assure common access to hospital and department information to promote trust and confidence.
- Prioritizes work in the best interest of the patient, sharing the work with team members.
- Develops and leads training programs for new employees and students, being helpful and supportive in delegating their teaching.
- Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
- Attends department huddles, staff meetings and other required training.
- Checks emails regularly for huddle minutes and important communications relevant to assignment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution, and have at least two years of laboratory training or experience or both in non-waived testing, in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service for which the technical consultant is responsible.

- Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

- Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position. Work may occasionally require travel. May drive a UPH vehicle, rental or own vehicle.
