Job Summary
The HVAC Chief Engineer maintains Bethel's HVAC and mechanical systems and is responsible for operating and maintaining the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, providing a safe, energy-efficient, comfortable working and living environment on campus. This role performs maintenance, repairs, and improvements in accordance with established policies, procedures, preventative maintenance schedules, trade practices, as necessary, to maintain a functional facility. Responsible for maintaining boiler operations and appropriate records/documentation. This is an essential staff position and subject to on-call rotation.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and replace HVAC equipment. Install and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Perform Boiler rounds and boiler water and chiller treatment testing.
  • Preventive maintenance on all heating and cooling equipment.
  • Assist supervisor with boiler operation, boiler log, repair decision, and boiler operations.
  • Support other parts of Tech Services and University Maintenance Facilities teams.
  • On-call technical services functions.
  • Snow removal as needed and other duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Class C Chief Boiler license, or able to pass exam within 60 days of employment.
  • Refrigeration License Type Universal.
  • Combustion and efficiency testing experience.
  • Experience working with Alerton, Trane and Johnson Control Systems, preferred.
  • Experience working with variable frequency drives, DanFoss and ABB preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Possess strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
Experience

Required:
  • 5+ years' experience with HVAC commercial and residential systems and controls.
Education

Required:
  • High school, GED, or trade school diploma.

Additional Information

  • Must be able to work outside, in very cold and hot conditions.
  • Must be able to work on roofs, ladders, and lifts.
  • Sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, lifting (50 lbs.), working at heights required.
  • Working condition may require some exposure to a dusty environment, heavy odors, and hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work an on-call schedule, in addition to normal work week hours.
  • This role requires compliance with environmental health and safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the University and state policies and directives.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and must be available outside of normal work hours, when needed, to support contingency operations which may include snow removal, support of special events, and other university needs.
  • Summer maintenance work presents unique demands on the department and vacation opportunities are normally limited during Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend due to graduation and Welcome Week events.
  • In addition, vacations are normally limited beginning the first full week of August through Labor Day due to the wrap-up of summer projects and preparation for the start of the school year.
  • Normal work week is 40 hours per week. 12 months per year. Overtime hours as required.
