Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing repair and maintenance on a wide variety of complex medical instrumentation with a focus on networked and computer-based medical systems with emphasis on central station patient monitors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • California Driver's License (DL)
  • Post high school qualification/certificate in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics, or related field
  • 7-10 years of experience in the biomedical equipment industry.
  • Electronic technician experience and skills.
  • Experience with high-modality non-imaging equipment (e.g., anesthesia machines, ventilators, heart-lung machines) is essential.
  • Electronic technician skills including electronic and network troubleshooting, system troubleshooting, ability to read electronic schematics, perform electronic and electromechanical assembly and repair.
  • IT skills focused on networking (e.g. IP addressing, firewalls), and network-connected medical applications (e.g. HL-7).
  • Knowledge of physiology to a sufficient level as required to understand the equipment being repaired and maintained.
  • Ability to communicate with staff and vendors regarding equipment issues with both verbal and written communication methods.
  • If not already obtained, the candidate is expected to complete manufacturer-specific training within 6-12 months of appointment.
  • Excellent communication (verbal, listening, and written) skills.
  • Skills to read electronic schematics in order to perform electronic and electromechanical assembly and repair.
  • Knowledge of biomedical instrumentation, including computerized medical systems and computer/medical device networking.
  • Knowledge of physiology to a sufficient level as required to understand the equipment being repaired and maintained.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CBET, CLES, or CRES
  • Complete the CBET training within 12 month of onboarding
  • Manufacturer-specific training on critical devices is highly desired.

Department Overview

Clinical Engineering technicians are responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of medical equipment. This position is primarily responsible for providing repair and maintenance for complex medical and electromechanical medical devices, focusing on life-support devices including but not limited to anesthesia machines, ventilators, heart-lung machines, patient monitoring equipment, integrated hybrid OR equipment and a variety of other high-end equipment including networked medical devices.

Work Environment

Work hours/days: Variable/variable. Required to work alternative shifts at the discretion of department management with proper notification. May be occasionally required to be available on a paid standby basis for emergency repair calls on nights, weekends and holidays. Willing to respond to emergency off-hours repair calls on nights, weekends and holidays. Willing to work overtime for special projects and emergency repairs. This position is subject to the DMV pull notice system. No smoking in the work area or in any UC vehicle. NOTE: UCDHS is a smoke-free campus.
