Overview
All hours will be worked on site in Des Moines. The Risk Management Program Manager provides oversight and coordination of the Medical Center's Risk Management Program. The Risk Management Program Manager is responsible for the primary risk identification processes throughout the health system as directed by the Risk Management Plan. With the information gathered, the risk management program manager analyzes loss and other data sources, and develops risk mitigation activities, metrics for monitoring these activities, and supports the claim reporting function when risk issues are identified that could lead to a liability claim against the organization. Responsibilities
- Serves as member of Critical Events Committee (CEC), safety, mortality/morbidity, and other committees that would benefit from risk management representation
- Establishes and maintains a data gathering and profile analysis for hospital wide risk management activities: Reviews Event Reports to screen for potential liability and appropriate follow-up. Provides documentation on Event Reports which require follow-up/action for Risk Management. Works with departments to ensure timely follow-up of Event Reports. Assists senior leaders, Executive Directors/Directors, Managers and other staff in using the Event Reporting computer system
- Reviews Unexpected Outcomes (U/O's) daily and works with management in investigating and handling same, ensuring follow up as appropriate
- Provides education on risk management issues and unusual occurrence reporting/database
- Provides reports of Event Reports and tracking/trending same to Managers, Directors and Senior Leaders
- Prepares drafts of committee and board reports concerning risk management on a regular basis as requested
- Investigates matters as designated by CEC and/or Risk Management based on severity of event and potential for compensation and/or litigation
- Serves as resource in Patient Rights area
- May complete and report potential liability issues and claims internally as well as to UPH, the Third-Party Administrator, and any other commercial insurers as indicated using claim reporting guidelines established by UPH legal and any commercial insurer as directed.
- Collaborates with claimants, senior leadership and other colleagues to evaluate and when indicated, negotiate asserted claims to resolution
- Provides training in RL Datix specific to event reporting data entry and reporting/investigation to leaders and staff

Bachelor's degree in nursing, other health-related field, or risk management |
Master's degree in nursing, other health-related field, or risk management |
Experience: |
Three years previous risk management or quality experience. |
Registered Nurse with 2 years' experience in clinical nursing. 5 years of experience in insurance claims, risk management, customer relations, legal experience, or as a health care provider, or the equivalent combination of education and experience required. |
License(s)/Certification(s): |
Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. |
Current nursing license in Iowa and/or Illinois. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). One designation must be achieved within one year of eligibility of certification. |
