The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in all aspects of pharmacy practice and performs any duties required to provide and ensure good patient care and safety as requested,

Follows workflow as appropriate,

Education

Must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent,

Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English,

Must be PTCB certified or receive certification within 1 year of hire,

Required maintain PTCB certification,

Must be registered with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician,

Experience

Prior experience as a pharmacy technician is preferred,

May be subjected to noise and disagreeable odors,

Moving mechanical parts are found in the work environment,

Universal precautions must be followed when working in any clinical area and especially when entering patient care areas,

Chemotherapy and hazardous medication preparation requires some exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and medications,

Workers are exposed to chemical hazards and must use appropriate personal protective equipment as trained,

Sterile product and IV preparation exposes employee to clean needle stick injury,

Restocking of Anesthesia kits involves potential exposure to blood or body fluids,

This exposure would only result in the event the Department of Anesthesia does not follow agreed upon procedures,

Responsible for medication distribution,

Collects and processes medication orders prior to distribution,

Delivers prepared medication to nursing units, as assigned,

Performs necessary tasks related to patient transfer and discharge, record keeping and transfer of medications,

Delivery of controlled substances to all hospital areas,

Maintenance of all automatic dispensing machines,

Checks for and removes expired medications from stock,

Restocks code carts,

Prepares and labels outpatient prescriptions,

Prepares and labels extemporaneously compounded non-sterile pharmaceuticals,

Sterile IV Admixture Service

Sterile and non-sterile product preparation,

Performs required calculations for all aspects of medication dispensing and compounding,

Using aseptic technique, prepares and labels all sterile products,

Maintains the integrity of laminar air flow hoods by cleaning and following proper procedures,

Delivers intravenous solutions to nursing units,

Monitors IV schedules and unused IV solutions on select nursing units to increase efficiency and avoid waste,
