Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $20.53 - $26.28. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is Step 1: $20.53/hr.

Job Closing Date

About the Job

Under the direction of a public safety team supervisor, maintain security and proactively work to deter crime, respond to incidents, and/or policy violations within the assigned job sites on the main UC Merced campus and/or campus properties. Conducts random and specific routine foot and/or vehicle patrol throughout job site. Secure buildings and properties to prevent unauthorized entry, vandalism, theft, and threats. Assist and support police staff in areas of crowd control, traffic control and access control. Monitor CCTV equipment and report malfunctions.

Assist with shift coverage during emergencies or unplanned assignments such as flooding, fire watch, hazardous material perimeter, University housing leasing contracts off campus, etc. Provide general information and assistance to staff, visitors, and official guests.

Assist emergency medical personnel as needed during emergency response. Prepare various written reports. Conduct an appropriate level of investigation and/or documentation on activities or incidents.

Provide tier response services as structured by UCM in accordance with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) campus safety plan, as defined in Section 2 Holistic, Inclusive and Tiered Response Services. This position will require responding to calls the campus deems as appropriate in lieu of a sworn police officer response.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

PREVENTION

  • Maintain security and proactively work to deter crime or policy violations within the assigned job site.
  • Provide high visibility uniformed patrols on foot, bicycle, and/or other approved/assigned means
  • Work variable shifts as needed to ensure public safety.
  • Conduct random and specific foot, bike, golf-cart, and/or vehicle patrol throughout the assigned job site.
  • Secure buildings and properties to prevent unauthorized entry, access, vandalism, etc.
  • Check doors, windows, lighting, respond to alarms and check locks to ensure their proper working condition and report deficiencies.
  • Identify potentially hazardous conditions and security deficiencies, report them and when possible, take appropriate steps to mitigate loss/injuries.
  • Provide safety escorts for employees, students, visitors as requested
  • Monitor CCTV equipment and report malfunction

SERVICE AND ASSISTANCE

  • Provide general information and assistance to students, staff, faculty as needed
  • Assist official guests and dignitaries as assigned.
  • Assist emergency responders as directed and needed for public safety
  • Assist and support police staff in crowd control, traffic control, access control, public safety information marketing, conduct safety related presentations, public speaking.
  • Direct traffic, provide directed crowd control, provide first-aid level emergency care according to policy and training.
  • Develop and promote safety programs to increase safety awareness around general and specific topics.
  • Conduct presentations on safety, tier response, campus safety, etc.
  • Be available to work university events as needed for public safety.
  • Participate in a campus tier response team at a level appropriate to the position level and training.
  • Respond to unlock doors for staff, faculty, and events.
  • Respond to alarm calls and assists in evacuation as needed sits/participate in appropriate committees.

REPORTS

  • Prepare routine reports, shift reports/document, appropriate legal paperwork to document incidents, events, security deficiencies, and service requests.
  • Prepare incident reports in cases such as fire, crime, hazards, emergencies, and incidents of significance.
  • Make referrals to campus resources for victims, survivors, and visitors seeking help and/or assistance.
  • Captures and produces statistical information as directed necessary to comply with CSP, campus inquires, DOJ, policy, etc.
  • Communicate through the chain of command all matters of concern, irregularities of University Policies and Procedures, and emergencies.

OTHER

  • Respond to and work at other UC Campuses or locations throughout the state as directed for university-wide mutual aid.
  • Testify in legal proceeds as directed by court or university request
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned
  • Attend and successfully complete assigned trainings
  • Attend trainings appropriate to the role, position, and responsibilities
  • All other duties as assigned
Qualifications

EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training.
  • Valid CA Driver's License.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Able to Work Outside
  • Ability to work under extreme pressure.
  • Good written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively convey information to others
  • Proficient in basic computer skills.
