Job Title: Director of Accounting

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

Position Overview:

The Director of Accounting will oversee the Firm's financial operations, including accounting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and internal controls. This leadership role requires a strong background in accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to manage a high-performing team. The Director will collaborate with senior leadership and external partners to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the Firm's financial operations while maintaining strict adherence to accounting policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Financial Reporting & Compliance: Develop and maintain a robust financial reporting framework, ensuring timely, accurate, and comprehensive reporting for all Firm departments and partners.
  • Accounting Operations: Oversee all aspects of the Firm's accounting functions, including financial transactions, reporting, and processing, ensuring high-quality and efficient results.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date on changes to financial regulations across all relevant jurisdictions, recommending and implementing processes to ensure the Firm remains in compliance.
  • General Ledger Oversight: Own and maintain the Firm's general ledger system, ensuring its accuracy and integrity in all financial reporting.
  • Partnership Tax Support: Work closely with the Firm's external CPA firm to prepare tax schedules for the partnership and support annual tax filings.
  • Audit & External Relationships: Manage the Firm's relationship with external auditors and CPA firms, taking the lead on year-end reviews and audits.
  • Banking & Insurance Relations: Cultivate and maintain relationships with external banking institutions, insurance providers, and other non-organizational accounting personnel.
  • Budgeting & Financial Planning: Collaborate with the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team to prepare and manage the Firm's annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Process Improvement: Design and implement strategies to continually improve accounting processes, ensuring operational efficiency and alignment with best practices.
  • Fund Management: Oversee the receipt, disbursement, banking, and safeguarding of all Firm funds and financial instruments.
  • Team Development: Lead the growth and development of the accounting team, providing mentorship, training, and opportunities for professional growth. Delegate tasks appropriately to maximize team effectiveness.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with Senior Directors and business support teams to enhance Firm onboarding and exit procedures, ensuring alignment with financial operations.
Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting (CPA or MBA preferred)
  • Experience: Minimum of 8+ years of accounting experience, preferably within a law firm or other professional services organization.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office tools (PowerPoint, Word), with strong spreadsheet and financial modeling skills.
  • Core Competencies:
    • Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and financial markets
    • Demonstrated ability to manage complex financial operations with minimal supervision
    • Exceptional organizational skills with a keen attention to detail
    • Proven leadership abilities and experience managing and developing teams
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions
Desirable Skills & Attributes:
  • Experience working with law firm or partnership-based accounting structures
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with a focus on process optimization
  • High level of discretion and professionalism when dealing with sensitive financial information

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;
  • licensure and certification requirements;
  • office location and other geographic considerations;
  • other business and organizational needs.

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
