Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
Plan, design, implement and support stable and secure enterprise central and client IT systems infrastructure. ITS Enterprise Systems supports more than 21,000 students, faculty, and staff by administering and/or supporting the campus enterprise server infrastructure, enterprise databases, and client computing infrastructure. All the core technology services offered by the University rely on the successful design, development, implementation, growth, maintenance, and monitoring of the campus systems infrastructure.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an IT architect and senior engineer who specializes in designing and maintaining large and complex on-prem, hybrid, and cloud-based data systems. This position plays a key role in developing the strategic direction for the Systems Center platform, Active Directory, and related systems to support enterprise-class services. This position is responsible for analyzing the university's business, data, and application strategy to develop a cohesive architectural model, and will be required to work on multiple projects that include complex integration efforts and the transitioning of applications to new technologies. This position is responsible for working with administrators from other areas of ITS and the University, including networking, identity, licensing, security, and compliance to provide technical roadmap discussions, architectural solutions, and management of critical enterprise systems infrastructure, particularly, within Windows, MacOS, and iOS framework, and will require existing and/or learned expertise with services such as Microsoft Intune, Azure Active Directory Join, Jamf Pro, Jamf Pro Connect, Apple School Manager, and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Anti-Malware. This position examines external and internal technology, long-term trends, and implications of alternative approaches, and articulates those concepts to other internal staff. This position will utilize in-depth knowledge of software engineering, cloud technologies, and data engineering to define target architectures, patterns, and processes. This position will lead and/or support tool and technology selection and drive standardization and reuse of industry-leading technology across the organization. This position will lead and/or support the evaluation and selection process for application packages to satisfy solution requests and related university needs. This position collaborates with ITS management in setting guidelines and standards to ensure systems are consistent with ITS' and UNCG's long-term strategies. This position provides technical direction to project teams to understand and can explain the interrelationship of multiple concepts and can translate these concepts, ideas, and situations into clear, understandable, and simple terms.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • 8 years of systems administration
  • 5+ years of SCCM/ConfigMgr experience
  • 3 years of Microsoft Intune experience
  • 3 years of Jamf suite experience
  • Proficient in enrolling, deploying, and managing devices in the relative platform (e.g., Windows, MacOS, etc.)
  • Working understanding of executing a robust patch management program
  • Working understanding of executing an application management program
  • Proficient PowerShell and JAMF API
  • Working understanding of RBAC access controls and conditional access
  • Working knowledge of data protection security best practices
  • Ability to create monitoring and reports on state/insights of the fleet
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree - 8 years of SCCM/ConfigMgr experience
  • 5 years of Microsoft Intune experience
  • 5 years of Jamf suite experience
  • Experience in migrating a large organization (more than 5,000 clients) from SCCM to Intune
  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate Certification (MD-102)
  • Other Microsoft 365 or Azure certifications (MS-900, AZ-104, AZ-900, etc.)
  • Cloud Certified in one or more architecture frameworks
  • Understanding of ITIL concepts
  • Prior architectural solutioning experience in defining, designing, and developing distributed and scalable products and services, including reusable domain-specific microservices on multi-platform /hybrid clouds (such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Rackspace, VMware, or OpenStack) and public cloud & SaaS applications
  • Knowledge of business ecosystems, infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), software as a Service (SaaS), SOA, APIs, open data, microservices, event-driven IT, and predictive analytics
  • IT Infrastructure / Cloud architect including research, development, and delivery of technical designs for Cloud, Network, Storage, Computer, Data, Security, and Application services
  • Comprehensive security background covering encryption technologies, network architectures, communications security, LDAP, SAML (single sign-on) and application-level access methods
  • Considerable demonstrated knowledge of distributed systems architecture, networks, middleware, or object-oriented analysis design
  • Knowledge of the strategy, structures, processes, procedures, and key technical elements of the enterprise
  • Ability to develop complex systems and module requirements, ability to write and maintain program documents
  • Ability to define strategies and plans for influencing multiple decision-makers
  • Experienced in facilitating sessions that address complex or highly sensitive issues
