Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The School of Art is part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, a community of artists with over 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students. CVPA is the largest visual and performing arts unit within the University of North Carolina system and is recognized for its comprehensive array of graduate programs and the success of its graduates. The School of Art enrolls over 600 undergraduate majors and offers degrees in Animation, Arts Administration, Art Education, Art History, New Media and Design, Painting, Printmaking & Drawing, Photography, and Sculpture & Ceramics. Housed in a first-rate facility at the Gatewood Studio Arts Building and located next door to the acclaimed Weatherspoon Art Museum, the School of Art features the Greensboro Project Space gallery-an experimental site in a vibrant downtown Greensboro. It is situated near the International Civil Rights Museum, Elsewhere Museum, and to other cultural institutions. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro's College of Visual and Performing Arts is pleased to announce the opportunity for a tenure-track faculty appointment in New Media and Design within the School of Art.
Position Summary
The School of Art seeks applications for the position of Assistant Professor in New Media and Design from candidates who are experienced artists and educators, and actively engaged in advancing equity and inclusivity in their research and/or pedagogy. UNC Greensboro is a minority-serving institution with an undergraduate population of 52% ethnic minority students and 66% female students. The School of Art's New Media and Design program encompasses a range of conceptual and technological approaches relevant to contemporary art and design practices. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education, creative research in art and design, and will provide service to academic and professional institutions. All faculty participate in and contribute to curricular development, program evaluation, and recruitment. Ideal candidates will have strengths in areas such as interactive art, digital art, internet art, generative art, or interaction design. In the cover letter, candidates should describe how their experience with inequality has informed their discipline, typical practices in their field, and the broader university environment, as well as how this has or has not influenced their professional work.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach three (3) courses per semester
  • Develop curriculum in New Media and Design
  • Pursue an active and rigorous program of creative research
  • Engage in an ongoing dialogue about the program and art and design disciplines
  • Continue developing diversity competencies, such as racial literacy and culturally responsive pedagogy, to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Supervise student research projects and theses
  • Provide service to the School of Art, college, university and community

Minimum Qualifications


  • MFA in Visual Art, or terminal degree in a related discipline
  • Strong record of creative activity
  • Fluent knowledge of contemporary art and design practices, broadly define to include diverse perspectives and approaches
  • Ability to situate your field in a social (cultural, historical) context

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience
