Job Summary

This is a 50% full-time position.

The Nurse Practitioner will support patient visits and enrollment in clinical trials sponsored by the newly established UCSF Lyme Disease Clinical Trials Center (CTC). The goal of the Center is to conduct and support diagnostic and therapeutic patient trials for Lyme Disease and other tickborne infections. The NP will see patients primarily in the Neuro-Infectious Diseases Clinic at UCSF, or at the UCSF Clinical Research Center.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $78.62 - $105.82 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Neuro-Infectious Diseases Clinic cares for patients with neurological infections and systemic infections that exhibit neurological signs. The clinic, staffed by neurologists with advanced training in infectious diseases, is located within the UCSF Infectious Diseases Clinic. We serve patients with a wide range of neurological infections, including brain abscesses, the tapeworm infection called neurocysticercosis, and neurological complications of syphilis or HIV. We also treat neurological syndromes such as meningitis, encephalitis or myelitis caused by bacterial, fungal, viral or parasitic infections.

Required Qualifications


  • Ability to gather clinical information, develop differential diagnoses, and create problem lists independently. Competent to direct patient management and lead care team.
  • In-depth knowledge of a broad scope of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a team of physician assistants, complex workflows, and competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by physician assistants in providing advanced-practice nursing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision. Ability to analyze and advise leadership regarding purchasing decision of these systems.
  • Responsible for understanding and communicating an advanced knowledge of national, state, and local educational and legislative issues affecting physician assistants. Demonstrated knowledge of state and national regulatory requirements. Promulgates advanced knowledge of institutional, state, and practice specialty professional standards and best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance. Participates in decisions on human resources matters.
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal, and operational management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability in advanced written and verbal communications skills. Able to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Physician Assistant Doctorate Degree
  • Experience working in clinical trials
  • Experience with phlebotomy and administration of IV medications
  • Experience in neurology and/or infectious diseases

License/Certification


  • Current California Physician Assistant License (PA).
  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Current national board certification by first day of work and maintain.
  • Active and transferable DEA license to California and have evidence of transfer by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Complete an AAPA recognized graduate master's degree program as a physician assistant.
  • Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through the credentialing process by first clinical day.
  • Current AHA BLS.

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
