SUMMARY Under guidance of the Shift Manager, this position supervises a group of Operations Foremen, ensuring subordinates perform their jobs efficiently, safely and in a timely manner. Communicates vessel operation sequence and stevedoring requirements to subordinates. Executes the planned yard sequence and advises planners on information required. PURPOSE
Manage live operations to meet operational needs & partner with IT and Technical department in fine-tuning automated equipment settings. Provide decision making to ensure flawless container flows between vessel, yard and gate and ensure proper management of systems. Provide direction to union labor Leads through daily work instructions, including dispatching as well as improving processes to minimize exceptions.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Lead and manage live vessel, yard, and gate operations to ensure smooth execution to meet operational targets. Ensure execution of the work instructions in the system by union labor with no stoppages and provide decision making. Proactively manage the efficient deployment of terminal Container Handling Equipment (CHE). Managing all the stops related to the Straddle Carrier (SC's), Truck Exchange Lane (TEL's) and Ship to Shore Crane (STS) to ensure systems return to operations as soon as possible. Proactively coordinate with Process Control Manager to actively manage operations and avoid stoppages by being ahead of the overall operational plan. Be standardization drive agent to ensure work consistency across all tasks and shifts following APM Terminals WoW. Proactively avoid operational wastes by performing checks on the plans and advise next course of action throughout the course of the shift. First line of support for all other functions in case of exceptions during operational execution. Liaison between Operations and Customer Service, Strategy, and other departments. Perform root cause analysis on operational failures including systems and take ownership of the follow up process through resolution while also identifying successes and revising processes for continuous improvement. Lead internal controls walkthroughs/design assessment operation projects to identify and assess changes to the control environments. Advise leaders and process owners to ensure operational risk are adequately mitigated. Define and identify operational control gaps and provide recommendations (remediation / mitigation) for control process improvements. Mapping, overseeing and reporting operational workflow by analyzing costs, productivity, and risks on a weekly & monthly basis. Develop and execute technical strategies, goals, objectives and implement key departmental policies and procedures. Forecast modernized equipment tooling demands and identify and propose prioritized focus operational areas to minimize system downtime and increase operation targets. Be actively involved in continuous improvement projects to support the achievement of targeted volume and productivity levels. Develop effective ways to communicate and lead union labor staff through one-on-ones and frequent team meetings to ensure terminal alignment on operational initiatives and to achieve operation goals.
CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Education - Minimum four (4) year degree from an accredited college or equivalent experience. The candidate must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in clerical roles, as an assistant, or technical positions. Experience in Terminal Operations or logistics is preferred, with a minimum of 5 years of experience. Familiarity with automation processes is preferred, and the ability to handle multiple software applications is required.
