The Opportunity:

The Engineer II performs tests of hardware for UCF researchers or external customers using laboratory test equipment. They are also responsible for maintenance of the laboratory test equipment. The Engineer II works with researchers on proposal activities, either by producing conceptual designs or by reviewing existing designs and recommending improvements. The Engineer II will also support researchers on sponsored projects by designing and building sub-systems and systems to meet design requirements, performing testing of those sub-systems and systems, and contributing expertise to technical reports and presentations to sponsoring agencies.

Responsibilities:

Laboratory Testing


  • Communicates with UCF researchers or external customers to determine test parameters.

  • Develops test procedures.

  • Performs testing of hardware using laboratory test equipment.

  • Collects and analyzes test data.

  • Documents results and produces test reports.


Design and build hardware/software for research projects


  • Communicates with researchers to refine and finalize design objectives.

  • Designs systems and sub-systems to meet design objectives; Produces technical drawings and specifications.

  • Works with researchers and vendors to purchase and acquire parts and system components.

  • Modifies, fabricates, and installs hardware or software components and integrates them into a system.

  • Performs testing of sub-systems and systems for verification and validation of requirements.

  • Contributes to research papers, technical reports, and presentations to sponsoring agencies.


Proposal Activity


  • Communicates with researchers to determine design objectives.

  • Performs conceptual design of systems and sub-systems to meet design objectives.

  • Consults with researchers about existing designs and recommends improvements.

  • Produces technical drawings and specifications.

  • Writes or reviews portions of grant or contract proposals.


Laboratory Maintenance


  • Performs periodic preventative maintenance on laboratory test equipment.

  • Troubleshoots equipment failures.

  • Communicates with vendors to procure parts or repairs.

  • Tests equipment for proper function after repairs.


Provides mentoring and training to students working on sponsored projects. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience with designing, building, and testing laboratory hardware/software, preferably spaceflight related.

  • Knowledge of Agile Project Management techniques or similar methodologies.

  • Proficiency with managing multiple projects while working independently and with limited supervision.

  • Capable of collaborating with others effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to research, analyze and critically review information.

  • Previous experience summarizing and effectively presenting data.

This position requires on-site work with the possible option for occasional hybrid schedule. Hybrid schedules within the state of Florida may be considered based upon specific circumstances and candidate qualifications.
