Job Summary: BDO's Insurance Advisory group provides a broad range of risk analysis services related to insurance including property/casualty (P&C), health, senior healthcare, and life exposure. Major offerings include services related to: reserve analysis, claims operational analysis, mergers & acquisitions due diligence, product design & pricing, predictive analytics, long-duration revenue recognition, litigation support, regulatory assistance, model validation, (re)insurance evaluation, ORSA, and enterprise risk management. We also provide a wide array of additional consulting services regarding financial reporting and audit related matters, captive feasibility studies, transfer pricing, IRS tax disputes involving insurance reserves, cash flow projections, funding studies, allocation schemes, and retrospective rating plan premium accrual calculations. Our professionals regularly provide advice, consulting, and audit support services to every segment of the insurance industry including insurers, reinsurers, regulators, captives, third-party administrators, agents and brokers, and bureaus and associations. - Leads a cross-discipline actuarial team, including development of growth strategy, budgets, and team building
- Manages business development opportunities and/or engagements from pre-sale and initial scoping
- Communicates, facilitates, and presents cogently; to and/or for all levels of industry audiences, clients and internal staff and management, i.e., journal articles; practice methodologies and tools; the writing and presentation of whitepapers; and/or other standard business communications
- Builds solid relationships with clients
- Develops an awareness of Firm services
- Approaches clients in an organized and knowledgeable manner
- Demonstrates flexibility in prioritizing and completing tasks
- Prepares budgets and forecasts for engagements
- Manages traditional loss reserving and ratemaking projects, establishes and implements engagement work-plans, and conducts other risk-analysis related-projects that may include one or more of the following areas in response to client requests:
- Economic capital model validation
- Enterprise risk framework consulting
- Financial performance reviews
- Predictive modeling and machine learning
- Merger and acquisition valuations
- Reinsurance program review
- Leads project management teams, including guiding the work performed by our managers and associates, completing assignments with minimal supervision
- Functions as the P&C actuarial subject matter expert on BDO audit engagements
- Builds relationships across consulting teams within BDO promoting synergies and mutual respect
- Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Leads a cross-discipline actuarial team which includes, but is not limited to:, development of growth strategy, budgets, supervising teams to create an atmosphere of trust; seeking diverse views to encourage improvement and innovation; participating in various staff recruitment and retention activities; and coaching staff including providing timely and meaningful written and verbal feedback
- Directs project management teams, including guiding the work performed by others, providing feedback and performance coaching to engagement team members
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Education:
- Bachelor's degree, required; with a focus in Actuarial Science, Applied Statistics, Financial Analysis, Insurance, Economics, Mathematics or a relevant quantitative discipline, preferred
Experience:
- Eight (10) or more years of experience in the actuarial and/or insurance field, required
- Experience with multiple P&C insurance coverages, required
- Experience evaluating actuarially determined assets/liabilities as a subject matter expert for audit engagements under the applicable audit guidance, required
- Experience with research related to the retrieval and organization of high volumes of information, required
- Experience with health, life, and annuity products, preferred
- Analytical and creative problem-solving experience related to the insurance value chain in the following areas, preferred:
- Financial, Risk, or Capital Modeling
- Data Analytics
- Predictive Modeling
- Machine Learning
License(s)/Certification(s):
- Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS), required
- Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA), preferred
Software:
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite, specifically Excel, Word and Access, required
- Experience using actuarial software such as Arius, preferred
- Programming experience with R and/or other statistical software, preferred
- Expertise in statistical modeling programs such as regression, GLM, cluster analysis; principal mechanisms; feature creation; and validation, preferred

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. National Range: $250,000 - $300,000 Maryland Range: $250,000 - $300,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $250,000 - $300,000
