Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP) - Child Neurology APP Manager

Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin is an academic partner Children's Wisconsin, the region's only independent healthcare system dedicated solely to the health and well-being of children. This free-standing 306-bed children's hospital ranks as one of the top children's hospitals in the United States.

The Department of Neurology, Division of Child Neurology is seeking a Manager for the Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the blended services as a member of the Department of Neurology, Division of Child Neurology located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Children's Wisconsin.

The Ideal Candidate will have a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and ensure an environment of safe quality care wanting to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care to a Pediatric population in a blended setting.

In addition to direct patient care, the Manager of NP/PA's will provide supervision and coordination of Advanced Practice Providers within the neuroscience services and implement policies & procedures to maximize efficiency for the program and the Advanced Practice Provider model. Coordinate and supervise the recruitment, training, and evaluation of Advance Practice Providers within the Child Neurology Division. Participate in activities as a liaison for Advanced Practice Providers as necessary and represent the Department of Neurology to the Office of Advanced Practice within MCW.

In this role you will,

Core Administrative / Leadership Responsibilities:

  1. Acts as the primary blended APP liaison and serves as a consultant between the APPs and Attending Physicians and Nursing Directors to ensure patient care needs are met.
  2. Assists Division Administrator with recruitment activities, such as job description development, resume screening and interviewing.
  3. Facilitates onboarding and coordinates precepting of new APP hires functioning in the blended setting and serves as the primary resource for the discussion of roles, expectations, and APP care models with new hires/recruits.
  4. Leads the APP performance evaluation process, (EMERGE). Assists with performance improvement plans, as needed.
  5. Mentors and provides necessary support for professional development by acting as liaison to professional growth opportunities and activities, and/or coordinating profession specific venues for learning.
  6. Facilitates blended APP scheduling process, to include but not limited to vacation/CME request approvals, and inpatient coverage.
  7. Enters, updates, and approved timecards on a monthly basis for APPs.
  8. Works with Division Administrator to ensure adequate personnel to cover high census periods, as needed.
  9. Manages open encounters to assure timely closure of encounter.
  10. Acts as a resource for the blended APP group related to community activities, professional organizations, marketing, and public-speaking forums to educate others about APP and specialty specific topics.
  11. Promotes accountability and professionalism within the practice.
  12. Serves as the key representative of the Department of Neurology to the Office of Advanced Practice.
  13. Serve as a key representative on the Departmental or institutional committees for APP practice and professional development.

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Child Neurology intervention in blended environment as a member of the Neurology Service.
  2. Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  3. Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  4. Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Child Neurology services.
  5. Facilitates and communicates with patient, family, and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  6. Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  7. Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  8. Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

Required Experience:

Minimum of 5 years' experience required.

Preferred Experience:

3 or more years of clinical experience in Neurology preferred.

Prior supervisory experience is a plus.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
