Job Summary:

The Office of Social Health Sciences and Programs (OSHSP) at the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) oversees, creates synergies, and guides the growth of SMPH's current and future initiatives, policies and programs that are designed to study and eliminate health disparities. The office works closely with leaders in research, education, clinical and public health realms to build capacity and ensure the advancement of health equity research. Additionally, the office oversees grantmaking programs committed to improving health and advancing healthy equity in Wisconsin through investments in community partnerships, education and research.

The Office of Social Health Sciences and Programs includes the Wisconsin Partnership Program grantmaking endowment, the UW Center for Health Disparities Research, the Milwaukee-based Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services maternal child health re-grant initiative, a new initiative to improve rural healthcare in targeted pilot Wisconsin communities, philanthropic activities and industry partnerships, all within scope of the office's core mission.

The Research Specialist will work under the supervision of evaluation leadership to conduct internal evaluation for the three UW-Madison based grant funding mechanisms housed within the Office of Social Health Sciences and Programs at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. They will develop, design, and conduct research projects and are responsible for daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision. Additionally, they will provide evaluation support for grant recipients and communications support for the Wisconsin Partnership Program.


Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 15% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 20% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 20% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 15% Performs literature reviews and writes reports
  • 15% Provides evaluation support for grant recipients
  • 5% Assists the Wisconsin Partnership Program communications staff with outcome reports and other public-facing communications as needed

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
Preferred focus in a social science field, particularly anthropology, sociology, psychology, communications, public health, social work, or related field


Qualifications:

Minimum Required Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
-Minimum two years' experience in program evaluation or social science research
-Experience with social science data collection and data analysis, including basic statistical knowledge
-Experience with mixed-methods social science research techniques

Preferred Skills, Experience, Qualifications:
-Experience developing logic models and/or theories of change
-Experience with nonprofit program evaluation
-Experience with science communication (especially translating scientific information for a general audience)

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
-Ability to communicate with diverse groups of people
-Ability to meet deadlines and manage tasks without close supervision
-Commitment to health equity and a desire to support community organizations and faculty in their health equity-focused work
-Excellent written and oral communication skills
-Knowledge of basic statistics
-Knowledge of data analysis tools, such as Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and/or R
-Knowledge of various data collection tools, including Qualtrics, REDCap, and/or Google Forms
-Willingness to learn and/or do research to further develop a skill set


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
