I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Provides instruction and training on dosimetry and basic radiation physics to therapists, residents, and entry-level dosimetrists.
2. Works closely with the senior physics staff with development of new treatment planning and delivery methods.
3. Assists the senior physics staff with treatment planning, dose calculation and treatment delivery for advanced radiation therapy methods such as stereotactic radiosurgery, prostate seed implants and total body irradiation.
4. Gathers needed data for treatment planning during simulation.
5. Creates treatment plans that meet the prescriptions provided by the physician and guidelines provided by the senior physics staff.
6. Performs dose calculations based on treatment plan approved by the physician.
7. Coordinates with radiation therapists to ensure agreement of planned and actual treatment fields.
8. Participates in brachytherapy treatments by performing needed treatment planning, dose calculation, source handling and delivery.
9. Performs measurements as needed to verify the correct implementation of treatment plans, to document the radiation levels in the vicinity of patients, and to verify removal of radioactive material following brachytherapy.
10. Maintains and processes a variety of computer based and manual records, data and reports, such as calibration records and documentation on receipt, use, and disposal of radioactive source material in the custody of the Department of Radiation Oncology.
11. Assists in providing radiation protection instructions for persons caring for and visiting patients.
12. Participates in the weekly chart rounds.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) certification by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB).

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Minimum of 1 year of experience after CMD.
2. Knowledge of basic radiation physics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and human anatomy.
3. Ability to work independently with Windows based word processing and spreadsheet programs.
4. Ability and willingness to handle radioactive materials in accord with the precepts of the Radiation Control Program, as well as Hospital approved materials routinely used for patient positioning and treatment field modification.
5. The ability and willingness to respond to the work situations, which may require evening and weekend work.

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment. Physical requirements include normal manual dexterity, visual acuity as well as normal lifting ability.
