JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Toews Lab of Pennsylvania State University seeks to hire five seasonal field technicians to monitor Vermivora (golden-winged, blue-winged, Brewster's, and Lawrence's) warblers on Fort Drum, New York from 15 April - 15 July 2025. Primary tasks include nest searching and monitoring, target-netting, and color banding and bleeding both adult and nestling warblers. Shared field housing, per diem for meals, and the use of field vehicles will be provided.

Required Qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record
  • A Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, zoology, or similarly appropriate professional experience.
  • Due to the nature of this position, applicants must be U.S. citizens to comply with federal regulations for work on a U.S. military base. Only U.S. citizens will be considered for this role.

Applicants should be comfortable working alone in the field and able to maintain a good attitude in the face of poor weather conditions and biting insects. The ability to follow strict protocols and use common sense when accessing US Army training areas is essential. Applicants should have good hearing and full-color vision and be able to walk up to several miles a day over uneven terrain. Ideal applicants will be self-motivated, patient, and have a good sense of humor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nest-searching and monitoring ground-nesting passerines
  • Conducting behavioral observations of birds
  • Mist-netting and banding of birds
  • Collecting brachial blood samples of birds
