Underwriting Specialist II

Huntington T. Block (HTB) Insurance Agency, Inc., a business group within Aon Affinity US, is a leading managing general underwriter of Fine Art & Musical Instrument Insurance.

The Underwriting Specialist II is a hybrid role with the flexibility to work both virtually and in office two to three days a week at our Washington DC office.

Your impact as an Underwriting Specialist II

Responsible for the day-to-day underwriting, servicing, and client/broker relationship management by obtaining a detailed knowledge of underwriting guidelines and policy forms, from both a coverage and process standpoint, with HTB's:

  • Musical Instrument Insurance Program (MIIP).
  • Fine Art Insurance (FA).
  • Commercial Insurance (CL).

Also, there would be the requirement to become familiar with other Aon Affinity US programs, including:

  • Flood Insurance.
  • Cyber-liability insurance.
  • Nonprofit Directors & Officers Insurance for museums, symphonies, etc.
  • Other Property and Casualty (P&C) lines of coverages both required.

Within stipulated underwriting authority limits, this position is accountable for reviewing and evaluating applications for insurance coverages in order to classify the degree of insurable risk and determine appropriate premium amounts. This is a primary level underwriting position responsible for handling submissions involving moderately complex exposures and medium to high coverage limits.

What the day will look like

  • Review and evaluate insurance applications and related documents, including schedules of art or musical instruments, location and loss data, and other information needed to properly evaluate and classify the degree of risk in relation to proposed coverage limits.
  • Obtain all relevant information not included with the initial submission to ensure a thorough evaluation of the risk. Review and evaluate renewal business and recommend appropriate actions to attain premium rate and loss ratio objectives. Actively supports and monitors the renewal process drafting quote comparisons, coverage inquiry and analysis responses.
  • Carefully produces and delivers the following in a timely fashion: renewal solicitations, quotes, certificates of insurance, binders, policies, schedules, invoices, and endorsements, etc. Remarkets existing policies per client requests or as warranted by market conditions.
  • Develop and maintain positive and constructive professional relationships with underwriters, independent agents/brokers (all from an internal and external standpoint) along with clients and colleagues. Liaises with HTB's Claims Department or insurers as required.
  • Attains planned for Renewal Account Policy Retention & New Business Goals by understanding the coverage provided, the client's needs and complying with HTB's service delivery standards.
  • Addresses and resolves client service requirements and or questions. Manages accounts receivables and responds to client payment-related requests.
  • Supports the team's annual New Business Sales Goal by actively participating in new business and account rounding efforts as required. The individual annual sales and account rounding goal, if any, for this position is typically $50,000 or less.
  • Participates in and contributes to team, carrier and client meetings including insurer audits. May be asked to attend and network at association conventions, conferences, trade shows, museum/gallery openings, business luncheons and similar events if and as assigned. Some travel may be required.
  • Complete a variety of underwriting assignments and performs related duties as assigned.
  • Complexity of clients: Typically, low to moderate. However, as an insurance professional you should possess the ability to effectively manage clients with a higher level of complexity as required.

Skills and experience that will lead to success

  • Property and Casualty (P&C) broker insurance license preferred, will be required to obtain with in 90 days of start date.
  • 1-3 years of P&C insurance experience preferred
  • Ability to learn, understand and apply the principal concepts, terms, and conditions of P&C insurance.
  • Experience with the Microsoft office suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Ability to work proficiently with AuMine, HTB's agency management system and other Aon systems.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or commensurate education and/or work experience
  • P&C insurance designations (CIC, CPCU or ARM, etc.) are a plus

The salary range for this position (intended for U.S. applicants) is $55,000 to $65,000 annually. The actual salary will vary based on applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
