The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator is responsible for programmatic operations pertaining to performance improvement according to standards and requirements set by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Some responsibilities include concurrent and retrospective extraction from patient 's charts and its entry into the Trauma Registry, trending data points, and completing quality performance management tasks . This position is essential to and required for the trauma program to have accurate and up to date data to support research, injury prevention efforts, and quality improvement activities. The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator ensures that data extraction and entry into the registry is accurate, and appropriately reflects patient events that require performance improvement assessments. The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator has accountability for monitoring and executing performance improvement efforts according to program requirements to
ensure optimal care of the injured patient. The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator will assist the trauma program leadership in maintain the integrity of the registries, generate queries and reports, perform PI efforts according to established standards, and ensure compliance with all HIPAA regulations. The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator will interface with both the delivery networks of Yale New Haven Health System, and other trauma programs in the region to promote a systems approach to quality care for the trauma patient.

Responsibilities

1. Program Performance: Participates in departmental strategies to ensure the successful provision of programs, reporting, and projects in support of the wellbeing of the trauma department and trauma program.

1.1 Demonstrates effective oversight of performance improvement processes , collaborating with the inter-professional team to provide high quality trauma care.
1.1.1 At regular intervals, conducts primary and secondary reviews of process measures, filters, and complications according to institutional guidelines established in compliance with regulatory oversight
and governing bodies.
1.1.2 In collaboration with the trauma program leadership, prepares and/or presents tertiary reviews at trauma quality meetings; including appropriate related peer review documents.
1.1.3 In collaboration with trauma program leadership, prepares and/or presents monthly reports andappropriate tertiary reviews for the multidisciplinary QI and Trauma Operations meetings .
1.1.4 In collaboration with trauma program leadership, prepares and/or presents the necessary program support document and reports for trauma program verification.

1.2 In collaboration with trauma program leadership, demonstrates effective oversight of the trauma performance management program.
1.2.1 Assists with the development of program-specific administrative and clinical guidelines.
1.2.2 Assists with the development of tracking and reporting mechanisms to support performance improvement programs and initiatives.
1.2.3 Assists with the design and implementation of audits and reports to support registry data validation.
1.2.4 Coordinates and/or participates in performance improvement initiatives to enhance programmatic processes to meet organizational and regulatory requirements.

1.3 Organizes, facilitates and/or participates in trauma related educational opportunities
1.3.1 Target education programs for physician providers
1.3.2 Target education programs for nursing providers
1.3.3 Support education for advanced practice providers
1.3.4 Ad hoc education in formal and informal venues, as indicate by programmatic findings
1 .4 Organizes, facilitates and/or participates in special projects to support the trauma program

2. Quality & Safety: Role models and supports excellence in professional practice to promote safe, high quality work product in the department to achieve superior outcomes.

2.1 Collaborates with program leadership and other healthcare professionals to determine the full extent of injuries and complications to address concerns regarding inaccurate data or data sources
2 .2 Facilitates the streamlined flow of performance improvement data into the trauma database
2.3 In collaboration with program leadership, monitors staff understanding of department metrics and national benchmarking. Provides feedback and education to support staff knowledge .
2.4 Makes recommendations and develops processes and guidelines in collaboration with program leadership to improve data collection for the registry and support performance improvement.

physicians, staff, and department support personnel.
3.1 Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to the trauma program to support a unified team in the care of the trauma patient

4. Professional Effectiveness: Accountable to ensure professional practice and clinical competence with the trauma department programs.
4 .1 Maintains flexible work schedule to meet the needs of the Trauma Department and its programs
4.2 Provides ongoing program-related communications to program leadership and other stakeholders as needed
4 .3 Represents the trauma program on a local, regional and national level.

4 .4 Responsible for maintaining and improving knowledge base relevant to projects and programs throughinservices, meetings, seminars and current literature


Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in nursing required.

EXPERIENCE

Three to five years' experience working with complex system issues such as triage or program development required. Five to seven years' experience in Critical Care and/or Emergency Nursing preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent communication, negotiation and organizational skills. Excellent clinical judgment. Excellent knowledge of personal computers and related software. Adaptability to a wide variety of professional interactions. Comprehensive understanding in the use of medical records for data abstraction. Will be trained in the use of current ICD and injury systems coding.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Responsible for oversight of accurate data extraction and entry into the registries. Together with trauma program leadership, is responsible for the selection of diagnosis and procedures and appropriate codes; determination of correct principal diagnoses and procedure, correct ICD codes and ISS scoring. Assist program leadership with the timely and accurate execution of the trauma performance management program.

COMPLEXITY

Exercises independent judgment in determining appropriate diagnostic and procedure data from all types of medical record documentation and physician communication. Accountable to outside regulatory bodies for accuracy of trauma registry and systems.

LICENSURE

Registered nurse with current license in the State of Connecticut

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND

May require prolonged sitting. May require prolonged use of computer monitors. May require walking and transport between hospital, health system and university campus locations.

This is an exciting new role to support high quality trauma care to our pediatric patients

This role will work closely with the Pediatric Trauma Coordinator with conducting performance improvement efforts that include investigation, education, and launching special projects
