Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate I for the Surgical Oncology department within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The Research Associate I position provides an opportunity to develop clinical and translational research skills in oncology through independent conduct of a significant project of larger translational research studies. Under the guidance and direction of the PI, this position is responsible for the design and conduct of highly specialized interventional and non-interventional research in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer epidemiology, health services research, clinical research, cancer control, and disparities. This position is responsible for participating in the planning, development, and implementation of laboratory and research studies and clinical trials as assigned and approved by the principal investigator (PI). In addition, the RA I will contribute to the PI's grant proposals and write grant proposals on her/his own to acquire funding. Additional responsibilities of this position include devoting 20% of the time to research efforts of the Rutgers Cancer Institute Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ( DEI).
The PI (Dr. In) is a GI surgical oncologist and the Chief Diversity Officer at the Rutgers Cancer Institute. Her research focuses on strategies for early detection of gastric cancer (GC) in the US, particularly understanding GC risk factors for diverse US populations and exploring biomarkers for early detection of GC. She also focuses on understanding and developing interventions to reduce GI cancer outcome disparities.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Conducts research experiments independently, or as assigned, to design and conduct highly specialized and technical research in the field of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer epidemiology, health services research, cancer control, and disparities.
  • Contributes to the design and conduct of research studies and clinical trials, including study design, protocol development, patient recruitment, sample, and data collection.
  • Supports studies using study samples, such as biomarker and microbiome analysis.
  • Supports studies using databases, such as epidemiological studies and risk prediction modeling.
  • Generates, compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions, recommendations, etc. pertinent to research activity.
  • Contributes to the PI's grant proposals, as well as write grant proposals on her/his own.
  • Contributes to the PI's manuscripts, as well as write manuscripts on her/his own.
  • Reviews and analyzes scientific data, scientific reports, publications and other documents pertaining to current research developments.
  • Gives oral and poster presentations of the research at lab meetings and conferences.
  • Functions as scientific consultant in areas pertaining to specific expertise.
  • Writes progress reports, IRB protocols.
  • Responsible for direct supervision of the work performed and teaching of research technicians, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and laboratory manager on laboratory administration and set up. Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians, and laboratory assistants as required.
  • Aid in the office of DEI research efforts, including analysis and interpretation of demographic and survey data, and developing research studies designed to better understand and develop strategies to diversify the research workforce.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. Degree or equivalent in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess effective oral and communication skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is also essential.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of statistical programs such as SAS, SPSS or STATA.
