What Your Job Will Be Like:

As a member of the Facilities Fire Protection Group,the Fire Detection Technician is responsible for the organization and quality of moderately complex work relative to the inspection, testing, and maintenance (IT&M) and minor system modifications of the installed fire detection and alarm systems and flammable gas detection systems located throughout Jefferson Lab facilities. This individual works undersupervision of the department Subject Matter Expert and will be trained toplan their work for short and intermediate durations.

In this role you will:


  • Inspect, test, and maintain (IT&M), installed fire detection and alarm systems and flammable gas detection systems located throughoutthe facilities, conducting minor system modifications as required. The maintenance component of this role is high volume and involves extensive, hands-on field work in a fast-paced environment.
    • The primary activity is field service work related to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) required Inspection Testing & Maintenance (IT&M) of fire alarm systems.Field service work includes troubleshooting of the systems. Jefferson Labemploys a variety of fire detection technologies to protect the business and industrial occupancies of the approximate 163-acre site.
    • Conducts field work to accomplish minor alarm and detection system modifications under the direction of the FireMarshal
    • Conducts field work to assist JeffersonLab security technician, electricians, HVAC mechanics and general maintenance employees to accomplish Preventive Maintenance (PM) service
  • Utilize Jefferson Lab work planning tools to schedule and coordinate planned inspections and tests and record completed inspections and test data using computer-based data recording mechanisms.
  • Partner closely and work effectively with the Fire Suppression Technician to ensure adherence to corrective and preventive maintenance schedule.
  • Accurately record completed work using computer-based data recording tools that will include, but is not limited to, Excel Workbooks, Access database and Maximo work orders.
  • Apply technical knowledge of each detection system which can be gained by reading the equipment manufacturers Operations and Maintenance manuals.

Qualifications We Require:


  • High School Diploma
  • 5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • NICET Level I Certification within 1 yr

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:


  • Demonstrated experience performing multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to identify schedule conflicts within the group and provide solutions.
