Overview:

We are seeking a Nuclear Safety Engineer who will focus on providing nuclear safety support for nonreactor nuclear facilities and the High Flux Isotope Reactor. This position resides in the Nuclear Facility Safety Division in the Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical nuclear safety support for design of new Hazard Category 2 nuclear facilities and major modifications to existing Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities

  • Provide technical nuclear safety support for operation of existing nuclear facilities/activities

  • Perform, document, and maintain technical nuclear safety analyses for new and/or existing nuclear facilities/activities, including hazard identification, hazard categorization, hazard analysis, accident analysis, and establishment of hazard controls and their functional requirements

  • Generate applicable safety-in-design project documents in accordance with DOE-STD-1189, including Safety Design Strategy, Conceptual Safety Design Report, Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis, final Documented Safety Analysis, and Technical Safety Requirements for Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear capability projects

  • Coordinate with nuclear facility operations personnel and regulators to achieve and maintain approval of compliant safety basis documentation

  • Understand DOE requirements and guidance in order to assist in the development and implementation of nuclear safety basis analysis of ORNL nuclear facility policies, practices, and procedures

  • Ensure technical compliance with 10 CFR 830 Subparts A and B affecting facility safety through the maintenance and implementation of ORNL Standards Based Management Systems and internal procedures

  • Evaluate modifications, experiments, operations, and nuclear safety basis documentation in coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs

  • Provide technical training for ORNL staff in nuclear safety basis development, implementation, and maintenance

  • Validate, maintain, and operate computer codes to support nuclear facility safety analysis activities

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in an engineering or science discipline with 5-7 years of experiencein nuclear facilities required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with DOE nuclear safety analysis requirements, including DOE-STD-1027, DOE-STD-3009, and DOE-STD-1189.

  • Knowledge of hazard categorization and nuclear facility safety analysis techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience with generating Documented Safety Analyses in accordance with DOE-STD-3009.

  • Demonstrated experience with completing major modifications in nuclear facilities in accordance with DOE-STD-1189.

  • Demonstrated experience using radiation transport and/or shielding computer models.

  • Familiarity with nuclear facility Conduct of Operations, Nuclear Maintenance Management, radiochemistry, and radiochemical engineering.

  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
