JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The College of Engineering (CoE) is comprised of 12 departments, 330 faculty, 320 full-time staff, 8,200 undergraduates, and 1,500 graduates and occupies approximately 950,000 assignable square feet in 40+ buildings both on and off the University Park campus. The Skilled Trades Supervisor will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the shared educational engineering metal shops within CoE by providing students, faculty, and staff a reliable resource of knowledge and experience which enhances the shop opportunities offered for teaching and student projects. Expand knowledge to incorporate safety into shop assignments and procedures. Provide Penn State University-required safety training to students, faculty, and staff who use the shops. Oversee shop activities to ensure acceptable safety compliances by all users, provide laboratory safety guidelines to technicians, teaching assistants, and research assistants, maintain the shop property inventory, handle all shop-related expenditures and budgets, maintain and coordinate the shop schedule between multiple Departments, and manage the administrative responsibilities assigned to these shops. This individual will report to the CoE Facilities Manager and will be responsible for the stewardship of day-to-day shop activities including:
Requires an associate's degree or higher in Advance Machining, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate for this position will have a diverse and demonstrable background in machine shop management and operations, possessing knowledge of welding equipment, CNC mills and lathes, CNC plasma cutter, waterjet machine, and miscellaneous metal equipment; equipment maintenance; schedule management; shop safety requirements, budget management, and technical-service supervision. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong team and collaborative work abilities, adaptability, and ingenuity are also key qualities.
