Basic Functions


The part-time Counselor will provide counseling, career guidance and advisement services for T.A.P. students to help them determine and achieve their educational, vocational and personal objectives including helping students to identify, mitigate and/or remove whatever factors exist as impediments to possible success in the areas of academic and/or personal achievements. The part-time counselor will provide assistance with recruitment efforts and serve as a liaison with the local high schools and community organization. Working hours may include a combination of day/evening assignments; off-campus visitation of sites; conducting workshops; outreach presentations and recruitment events. supervising field trips; and/or require evening and weekend functions as part of assignment.

The Santa Barbara City College Transfer Achievement Program (T.A.P) is a support program within the University Transfer Center designed to assist ethnically underrepresented and economically and educationally disadvantaged students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university. T.A.P.'s goal is to provide student participants with the necessary knowledge and life skills to assist students with making informed decisions, setting goals, and implementing informed actions that will ensure a successful transition from SBCC to a four-year university.
Note: this is a temporary position funded by a Title V Hispanic Serving Institution grant called "Restructuring to Innovate Student for Excellence" (R.I.S.E.)

The starting credit part-time rate from salary table 9 is $47.54 per Lab hour. If you have a doctorate, the rate is $49.83 per Lab hour.

Representative Duties


Provide comprehensive counseling services to students including academic/transfer, career and personal counseling on a virtual, drop-in and appointment basis in an individual and group setting.
Assist students in clarifying their educational and transfer goals, developing student educational plans (SEPs) and selecting courses; monitor student transfer progress and modify their SEP as needed.

Provide crises intervention counseling as needed to assist students dealing with issues that could interfere with their academic success.

Provide students with resources they need to reach educational and personal goals
collaborate with both instructional and counseling faculty and staff and with special programs such DSPS, EOPS/CARE, MESA, in order to maximize student success.

Demonstrated empathy with the community college student clientele and an ability to relate to the full range of the students' aspirations, abilities, and educational backgrounds.

Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Willingness to work with students having a wide range of skills, motivation, and academic or vocational goals, as well as cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds.

Experience working with and ability to counsel students from diverse cultural, ethnic socioeconomic, academic, language and disability backgrounds.

Experience in group and individual counseling at a community agency, high school, four-year or community college.

Knowledge of four-year college and university programs including UC, CSU, private, and out-of-state universities and systems and how they differ.

Knowledge of the transfer process and university admissions procedures and transfer requirements.

Participate in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities at the college;
utilize and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods which includes integrating technology to support student learning and career objectives.

Conduct transfer related workshops and webinars provide special project program leadership as assigned.

Maintain and process a caseload; ability to develop and maintain student counseling notes in a timely and effective manner; contribute to the planning, coordination and implementation of T.A.P counseling services.

Participate in campus trips, outreach activities and events in campus classrooms, local high schools, and community agencies.

Perform other counseling related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, education counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, or the equivalent.

Spanish-speaking Bilingual/Bicultural desirable

Selection Procedure:

The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
