Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Information School (iSchool), teach one or more of the following courses in an online format for the spring semester of the 2024-25 academic year:

LIS 501 Introduction to Text Mining
LIS 635 Reference and Information Service
LIS 711 Data Management for Information Professionals
LIS 722 College and University Libraries (online)
LIS 751 Database Design for Information Professionals

Duties include: preparation of a syllabus in consultation with iSchool staff, preparation and grading of assignments and examinations, holding synchronous office hours and communicating with students via email, virtual meetings, or by other means.


Responsibilities:
Facilitates classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction and assists with instructional development and design for a single course or series of courses within an academic discipline to support the delivery of quality instruction. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.

  • 80% Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses, including assessment of student performance
  • 10% Develops instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction
  • 10% Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations

Education:

Required
Master's Degree
LIS 501: Minimum of a Master's degree in a social science or closely related field required with significant experience with data visualization and communications required.

LIS 635: Practical or teaching experience in providing reference services in a library, archive or other information agency required.

LIS 711 & 751: Minimum of a Master's degree in Library and Information Studies, Information Sciences or closely related field required.


Qualifications:

LIS 501: Experience working with computational methods and tools for processing, analyzing, and understanding text data. Experience with text data preparation and preprocessing, models of text content and meaning, exploratory text analytics, text classification, information extraction from texts, ethical issues in natural language processing (NLP), and related applications in information sciences and other fields. Practical skills experience with design and implement text mining solutions using popular NLP tools and programming packages. Experience teaching graduate students preferred.

LIS 635: Knowledge of tools, skills, and trends in the provision of reference and information services including specialized services to particular communities required. Experience teaching graduate students preferred.

LIS 711: Knowledge to effectively and ethically manage, organize and protect the data in organizational settings. Knowledge of major topics of data management addressed by the Certified Data Management Professional certification. Knowledge how to assess, construct and implement workflows, organizational policies and data architecture to improve data quality and security. Learn to clean and organize data for effective retrieval and use. Knowledge of the tools and techniques to support data interoperability, and gain understanding of contemporary data management ethical and policy issues. Experience teaching graduate students preferred.

LIS 722: Relevant graduate course teaching experience and/or at least three years of experience in an academic library required. This course is an overview of contemporary issues impacting libraries located at institutions of higher education spanning community colleges to large research universities. Previous experience teaching graduate students is preferred.

LIS 751: Knowledge of relational databases including basic design and concepts such as referential integrity and mandatory and optional relationships required. Knowledge and skill with SQL required. Previous experience teaching graduate students is preferred.


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 33.4% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 5 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Minimum $50,113 ACADEMIC (9 months)

Additional Information:

There is a possibility this position can be extended in subsequent semesters to teach one or more of the courses listed on this PVL, or similar courses within the department. This position may become renewable if there is a need for an ongoing appointment.
