Description

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the supervision and control of general accounting functions and for the recruitment and development of Accounting personnel. This individual ensures that data, records, and reports maintained by the department are current and accurate, and reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Additionally, this individual ensures adequate internal controls and due diligence procedures are in place and assists in the preparation of the Credit Union's consolidated financial statements.

Work Location - This position is an onsite or hybrid working arrangement, reporting to the East Lansing Headquarters 2-3 days per week.

Schedule - Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm Eastern Standard Time

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Accounting Manager:



  • Responsible for managing the daily activities of the Accounting Department. These activities include preparation of financial statements, internal controls and due diligence of Credit Union transactions; Accounts Payable, Employee Reimbursements, Fixed Assets, Prepaids and Accruals, GL account balancing, transaction settlement, general ledger reconciliation, and other accounting projects and systems.
  • Leads Accounting employees to provide superior service while assisting members and employees to achieve financial security, their goals, and ultimately, their dreams.
  • Directs and assists Accounting employees with operational issues (procedural questions, exception handling, etc.) and communicates any operational issues with the appropriate area.
  • Coordinates and assists in ongoing training and cross training of department personnel to ensure that staff members are achieving their individual goals and department goals. This includes regular coaching sessions, career development plans, and salary/promotion recommendations for each employee.
  • Reviews and verifies the accuracy of journal entries and accounting classifications assigned to various records.
  • Ensures that financial transactions are posted, and general ledger reconciliations are completed in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for review of general ledger reconciliations and timely resolution of outstanding items.
  • Supports and reviews the preparation and review of the monthly financial and statistical reports.
  • Supports and reviews the preparation and review of the quarterly Call Report, and other pertinent regulatory reporting.
  • Evaluates the impact of proposed accounting rule changes and makes recommendations for implementation. Communicates the impact of changes to other departments as needed.
  • Monitors operating expenses for reasonableness and notifies the appropriate department of significant invoice issues or late payments.
  • Resolves complex accounting issues and assists other areas in resolving accounting questions.
  • Assists internal auditors, independent auditors and examiners regarding policies, procedures, questions and records as they may pertain to the performance of their annual audit and/or examination and ongoing review of operations.
  • Participates in the development of accounting policies and administers approved accounting procedures. Monitors and evaluates established internal controls and reconciliation procedures to assure proper compliance.
  • Attends training/conferences to stay up to date on generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Assures that department is operating efficiently and effectively. This includes review and update of processes to ensure they fit the current size, structure, and scope of the organization.
  • Assists in the hiring process, review process, discipline and other management functions.
  • Contributes to community involvement efforts by volunteering to represent the Credit Union at such activities or serve on committees or boards as appropriate.
  • Participates in training activities within the department/branches/human resources, as well as training outside the department. Such training helps to ensure staff compliance with Credit Union policies and state and federal regulations and laws.
  • Performs related duties and assists other employees as required.


Senior Accounting Manager:



  • All the duties and responsibilities required of the Accounting Manager.
  • Responsible for preparation and analysis of the monthly consolidated financial and statistical reports. Presents financial results during management and employee meetings.
  • Responsible for the quarterly call report, and other pertinent regulatory reporting.
  • Attends training/conferences to stay up to date on generally accepted accounting principles and maintain CPA designation.
  • Responsible for development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the Credit Union.
  • Participates in project teams to ensure the accounting and financial reporting systems are appropriate for any new products or services; evaluate the need for additional internal controls.
  • Develops recommendations and suggestions for improving effectiveness or efficiency within the department and demonstrates the ability to implement said changes.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

    Accounting Manager:



    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required.
    • Minimum of three years of finance/accounting experience required, with a preference for knowledge of accounting operations, policies, and procedures specific to financial institutions.
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred but not required.
    • Requires verbal, quantitative, and interpersonal skills in order to deal with complex management problems and communicate with executives and outside officials.
    • Preference for management experience and skill with supervising staff to garner performance and engagement from employees through coaching and leadership.
    • Requires understanding of accounting principles, GAAP and FASB regulations, and good analytical abilities.
    • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with external and internal contacts at all levels of the Credit Union.
    • Experience in the use of personal computers, Microsoft Office products, spread sheet software such as Excel and other database management software.


    Senior Accounting Manager:



    • All the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the Accounting Manager.
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
    • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of the Credit Union's accounting operations and general policies and procedures of the Credit Union.
    • Requires the ability to interpret GAAP and FASB regulations to implement any new standards issued.
    • Advanced use of Excel and other accounting system applications.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively present accounting issues, risks or opportunities to executives and outside officials.


    Physical Demands and Work Environment



    • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
    • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.
    • Occasionally needs to move about inside of office area
    • Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure
    • This position is able to work in hybrid or onsite working arrangements.
